NAIROBI: A single goat – provided by a friend like you just six months agao – is making a big difference for Samuel and his family. Last year at this time little Samuel was sick, malnourished and failing in his school work. He simply did not have the physical strength to pay attention and do well. The family goat, whom they call Jonah, has made a whale of a difference.
Samuel’s mother, Anyongo, has become quite the entrepreneur. She is selling goat cheese, raising vegetables for the family, and wants another goat.
A GOAT IS A CURIOUS CREATURE
Some people like goats because they think they’re cute. Others marvel at the cast iron stomach of goats and their proverbial ability to eat – and digest – just about anything. I like goats because they are changing lives by the millions.
I will never forget my first up-close encounter with an African goat. The first thing I noticed is how his owner’s modest home and small plot of land were immaculately kept. Though poor, Abraham, the man whose turf I was on, was as joyful and positive as anyone.
